I did read China MiĆ©ville before starting to write, but not really a lot else that falls into the whole New-Weird-Slipstream-Infernokrushor-What-You-Will category. MiĆ©ville’s books were instrumental in encouraging me to get started writing, in part because he showed that you can write something really wonderful around the skeleton of a very basic, B-movie pulp structure: i.e. sometimes your characters’ motivation for getting from A to B can be we are being chased there by a monster, and that’s O.K.
